The found-footage subgenre takes to the air in TAPE 407, which purports to be derived from video recovered from a New Year’s Eve airliner crash. The filmmakers talk about the project after the jump, where you can also see the trailer.

Directed by Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin from a screenplay by Robert Shepyer, TAPE 407 is set on Optima Air Flight 37A, which hits bad turbulence that forces it down in a remote government-testing area. Only a handful of passengers survive, and are faced with a new threat to their lives in the form of mysterious monsters that are part of the top-secret Mesa Experiment. The cast is headed by Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Brendan Patrick Connor and Ken Garcia. “It was shot in five days and all ad-libbed by the actors,” producer Suzanne DeLaurentiis tells Fango. “It’s very fast-paced; unlike some found-footage movies that wait till till the second act before something happens, our chaos starts in the first 15 minutes.”

“We’d seen a ton of stuff done in this style before,” Fabrigar, who previously helmed a number of short films, tells us, “but never with a plane crash, much less twisting that into a creature film, so that definitely garnered our interest. Plus, we couldn’t escape the simple fact that it was a huge challenge, and that was exciting as well. Why? Because we only had five days to shoot it. Budget, time, location, resources—all these were factors, and we had to rock ’n’ roll to get it done on time. And we did. Also, working with Suzanne DeLaurentiis and the other producers, not to mention the great cast we were fortunate enough to get, made the production of TAPE 407 not only short—i.e., efficient and on time—but also very, very sweet.
