What could be creepier (and more fun) than watching a horror movie in the dark woods, outdoors, where anything can happen? That’s the idea behind the Saturday night outdoor screening of SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) at this weekend’s Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival®.

“Beginning at midnight, this is a screening you’ll want to stay up for, and we’re not guaranteeing you’ll get much sleep that night after,” said Jamie Kristen, director of logistics and one of the Festival organizers. “It’s going to be thrilling.”

The film presentation concludes a jam-packed day of Festival screenings and workshops at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center , and follows the 10 pm. – midnight “Haunted Cruise” on Big Bear Lake aboard the Miss Liberty.

SLEEPAWAY CAMP has become a cult classic since its release 28 years ago. It tells the story of slightly disturbed and painfully shy Angela Baker, who is sent away to summer camp with her cousin. Not long after her arrival, things start to go horribly wrong for anyone with sinister or less-than-noble intentions.

The film stars a then-13 year old Felissa Rose as the twisted sister Angela. Felissa has since become one of the top scream queens of the horror genre, and is currently in production on SLEEPAWAY CAMP REUNION. She is a judge at the Festival this year, and will be on hand to sign autographs, greet fans and possibly scare the bejesus out of them.

An added attraction to the Festival, the SLEEPAWAY CAMP screening is $5 and can be paid onsite. The event is included for “All Access” pass holders.   Tickets are still available for the Festival. Visit the festival's official site to purchase. To take the Haunted Cruise beforehand, reservations are required and can be made by calling (909) 866-8129.

Fangoria is presenting a workshop at the festival on the history of the magazine and genre journalism featuring founder Kerry O'Quinn, current Editor-In-Chief Chris Alexander and Contributing Editor Justin Beahm. The Fango workshop takes place on Saturday at 3pm.

Founded in 2009, the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival® is held annually in the mountains of Big Bear Lake, CA, to recognize excellence in the film genres of horror and science fiction. This year’s festival is scheduled for September 30th – October 2 at the Big Bear Performing Arts Center.
