Having spent four seasons so far in the midst of the vampire world of HBO’s TRUE BLOOD, actor Stephen Moyer is going to the (Jersey) Devil. He’ll star in THE BARRENS, to be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman.

Variety reports that Moyer will play a man who takes his family on a camping trip to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, the expansive wooded region reputed to be home to the legendary Devil, and comes to believe they’re being stalked by the creature. The Genre Company, which also backed Bousman’s upcoming remake of MOTHER’S DAY, is producing, with Anchor Bay set to release the film next fall. Bousman also scripted, and he’ll produce with John Eckert and Genre Company’s Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten. The filmmaker tells the trade that he wants to take the Devil myth, which has been the subject of numerous low-budget flicks in the past, “another step further. I don’t want to turn it into a cheesy creature feature. It’s about the characters for me, and having watched Stephen for years on TRUE BLOOD, I have no doubt he’s the right leading man.”

THE BARRENS will shoot in Toronto instead of Jersey, with production scheduled to begin later this month. Moyer’s genre credits also include PRIEST, a brief turn in OPEN HOUSE (opposite his wife and TRUE BLOOD co-star Anna Paquin) and the recently theatrically released THE CALLER, which has DVD and digital debut October 4, and which he discussed with us here
