The epic movie/TV adaptation of Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER may have fallen apart, but a small-screen translation of one of the author’s most massive recent tomes is now a go: A series based on his best seller UNDER THE DOME is in the works for Showtime.

Variety reports that DreamWorks TV, which optioned the book just before its 2009 publication, and Steven Spielberg have pacted with the cable station on DOME. King, along with DreamWorks TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, will executive-produce the project. UNDER THE DOME is set in Chester’s Mill, Maine, where a mysterious force field suddenly descends and seals the town off from the outside world, and those trapped inside begin to turn on each other. A writer is currently being sought. Spielberg and King had long tried to mount a film of King and Peter Straub’s THE TALISMAN, most recently as a miniseries for TNT, but it never transpired; hopefully things will pan out better this time around.
