The Landlocked Film Festival in Iowa City, Iowa (this weekend: August 25-28) is crawling with genre fare. CADAVER CHRISTMAS, MOLEMAN OF BELOMONT AVENUE, WOLFSBANE and more await genre fans at this largely free independent international film fest...

The independent scene is where some of the most exciting and revolutionary horror is being created, and in the world of small-budget cinema, the vehicle to exhibit such fare is at film festivals. Iowa City, Iowa has been home to the Landlocked Film Festival for five years, and this year's celluloid celebration includes a heaping shovel-full of genre titles spread out over the event's four-day schedule.

Thursday the 25th sees director Clay Westervelt's documentary POPATOPOLIS at 9pm CST, a feature that follows cult icon Jim Wynorski as he attempts to make nudie-horror THE WITCHES OF BREASTWICK in three days. The results are as hilarious as they are insightful, not only in the world of micro budget filmmaking, but into the world of outspoken Wynosrki. Director Westervelt will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening (he is also doing a documentary workshop on Saturday).

Friday the 26th is capped with a 9pm CST screening of THE MOLEMAN OF BELMONT AVENUE (see our MOLEMAN review here). From Chicago filmmakers John LaFlamboy and Mike Bradecich, and tells the tale of a pair of slackers trying to hunt a creature in their apartment building. This mysterious beastie has a taste for blood (pets in particular) and the not so dynamic duo tries to capture and kill the vermin before it eliminates the building's population (which includes Robert Englund). The MOLEMAN crew is invading Iowa City with a Zombie Bus full of the undead. Sure to be an unforgettable night! Directors LaFlamboy and Bradecich will be on hand for Q&A after the screening.

The dead stumble again on Saturday the 27th as CADAVER CHRISTMAS (see our coverage here) brings bloody holiday cheer to the festival at 9 pm CST. Following the exploits of a college janitor and his unlikely cohorts battling reanimated lab cadavers on Christmas break, CHRISTMAS is a hilariously gory romp. Director Joe Zerull will be on hand for Q&A after the screening.

Also at the fest, playing as part of a block of short films on Sunday (the 28th) in the afternoon is WOLFSBANE, a 15 minute excursion into a steampunk version of "Little Red Riding Hood" with bite from director Matthew Wilson. This screening is free.
