In Fango #306, on sale this month, this writer sits down
with actress Sissy Spacek to talk about her iconic role in Brian De Palma’s
CARRIE. And there’s another lady we know who’s been inspired by the legacy of
the legendary film…
Drag superstar Jackie Beat has been entertaining audiences across the U.S. and in Europe for over two decades with her razor-sharp comedy and hysterical song parodies. Beat has also appeared on many TV shows such as SEX AND THE CITY and in several movies, including FLAWLESS with Robert De Niro, the festival hit WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE and the upcoming camp-horror sequel GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER. But the one film that Miss Beat holds dear to her talented little heart is that macabre love letter to the social outcast.
“If I had to choose one movie that completely changed my life, it would have to be CARRIE,” the glamorous Beat proudly states. “It was a low-budget horror movie for teens, so when its two stars, Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, were each nominated for Oscars, it was almost as shocking as the movie’s often-copied ending!” Beat loves that the movie is a celebration of the misfit, saying, “If I had to summarize CARRIE and why I love it so much in just one sentence, it would have to be: “Don’t pick on the freak.” You see, Carrie White has powers that no one knows about—amazing powers that she has had to control over and hides her entire life. Sound familiar? When she’s pushed too far, she uses those powers to exact revenge on her tormenters. Needless to say, this made quite an impression on me and helped shape me into the person I am today: a writer and performer who, instead of setting people on fire or crushing them with a basketball backboard, kills ’em with my razor-sharp tongue!”
Have a look at Beat’s office—a monument to the movie, a shrine to a film that truly reflects the pain, anguish and struggle of the eternally different. For more about her, visit her official website. And be sure to pick up Fango #306 for a first-hand confessional from the woman who donned the pig blood herself…
