Makeup artist legend Dick Smith will be presented with an Honorary Award by The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Academy’s 3rd Annual Governors Awards dinner on Saturday, November 12, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center.

Smith began his career in 1945 as NBC’s first makeup man, and is known for his makeup artistry on such films as THE GODFATHER and LITTLE BIG MAN. In 1984, he won an Oscar for his work on AMADEUS and received a nomination for DAD in 1989. His contributions to the horror genre include the likes of THE EXORCIST, THE SENTINEL, ALTERED STATES, SCANNERS, GHOST STORY, THE HUNGER, SPASMS, the MONSTERS TV series, DEATH BECOMES HER and many more. Additionally, as an educator, Smith helped train many of today’s top makeup artists, including Rick Baker, Greg Cannom, Kevin Haney, Kazuhiro Tsuji, Mike Elizalde and Carl Fullerton.

Here’s what Smith’s son, David, had to say to FANGORIA: “Incredible news! I just heard that the Board of Governors of the Academy has voted to present an Honorary Award for lifetime achievement to my father. Isn’t it great news? I’m so happy.”

Our sincerest congratulations to Mr. Smith, a true pioneer and inspiration in the field of makeup FX.
