Rumors abound that actor, director, teacher and legendary special FX wizard Tom Savini will be returning to the foam-latex-and-Karo-syrup fold to handle the gore gags for FRIDAY THE 13TH: PART 2, the planned Platinum Dunes-backed sequel to last year’s remake. The prospect is delicious—along with his work on George A. Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD, Savini’s groundbreaking gags in Sean S. Cunningham’s original FRIDAY almost singlehandedly sparked the American splatter craze of the 1980s, and the visionary craftsman hasn’t done any real hands-on genre film work since 2002’s middling serial-killer biopic TED BUNDY.
Fango contacted the makeup maestro to see if there was indeed any truth to the tales (his IMDb page also lists FRIDAY 2 as an upcoming project). Alas, Savini was quick to dash out our hopes, like so many zombie brains. “Nope, I have nothing to do with it,” he tells us. “But I keep hearing about it at conventions. Who has announced such a thing? I’d love to do it if someone asks me…but no one has.”
Hear that, Michael Bay? You really want some street cred in your overstylized slasher sequel? Savini is willing to take your call, so let the talks begin. In the meantime, hardcore Savini-ites can catch the man on screen this summer in Robert Rodriguez’s hotly anticipated GRINDHOUSE spinoff MACHETE.
