It’s been a great year for independent genre features so far, and the quality keeps on comin’ this fall with the first-rate psychological thrillers TAKE SHELTER and THE SKIN I LIVE IN (pictured), both from Sony Pictures Classics. The films have now done a flipflop on their release dates.

Originally scheduled for October 14, Jeff Nichols’ TAKE SHELTER will now open in New York and Los Angeles September 30 before going wide in October. BUG’s Michael Shannon gives a galvanizing turn as a suburban working man who begins having apocalyptic nightmares—which influence his behavior in increasingly upsetting ways. Meanwhile, Pedro Almodóvar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN has moved from Oct. 7 to begin its platform release Oct. 14. This one also features a striking central performance, by Antonio Banderas as a doctor who exacts a truly bizarre revenge (which should remain a surprise, though some writeups have already revealed its nature). Watch the trailers below, check out TAKE SHELTER’s official site and look for interviews with the directors and stars of both in Fango #307, on sale in September.
