The Sci-Fi Spectacular will be held Saturday, April 10 at the Windy City’s Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Avenue). The highlight is a personal appearance by veteran genre writer/director/producer Larry Cohen, accompanying a showing of his 1982 flying-monster fave Q (pictured above). The full schedule of flicks, including a number of rarely screened features, is as follows:
12 noon: Gordon Douglas’ THEM!
2 p.m.: Mario Bava’s PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES
3:30 p.m.: John Carpenter’s DARK STAR
5:15 p.m.: Mike Hodges’ FLASH GORDON
7:30 p.m.: Q, with Cohen live in person
10 p.m.: Tobe Hooper’s LIFEFORCE
12 midnight: John Carpenter’s THEY LIVE
There will also be short films including Jessica Christopher’s SKIN DEEP, Jonathan DeQuattro’s EXPIRED and the world premiere of Lair of the Minotaur’s new video EVIL POWER, along with other special guests, an auction, prizes and other surprises. Doors open at 11 a.m. for attendees to shop at vendors’ tables that will be present, and a special Trailer Trash collection of vintage genre previews will precede the features at 11:30. Tickets are $24 on the day of the show and are now available for presale for $20 at the Music Box, Laurie’s Planet of Sound (4639 N. Lincoln, Chicago) and After Hours Movie Rentals (915 Foster Street, Evanston, IL), or by clicking here—but you can enter here to win one of two free pairs of passes! Just send an e-mail to
