After Roland Emmerich’s much-disparaged 1998 GODZILLA flick, it seemed like making movies about the Big G would be left thereafter to the Japanese (who do ’em right). But now it looks like U.S. filmmakers are about to give the kaiju another whirl.
Variety reports that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will co-produce and co-finance a new GODZILLA for release in 2012. Legendary, which acquired rights to the character from Toho (the studio that created him and will release the new feature in Japan), previously teamed with Warners to reboot the Caped Crusader in BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT, and the two have another fantasy update, CLASH OF THE TITANS, opening Friday. No talent has been attached yet, but we’ll keep our ears open for further updates.
