A whole bunch of genre DVD and Blu-ray release details and covers have come to light in the last couple of days, and we figured we’d put ’em out there in one big item. First and foremost are the complete specs and art for the Butcher Brothers’ new film THE VIOLENT KIND (pictured).
Scripted and directed by the Butchers (Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores), THE VIOLENT KIND is about a group of bikers whose party at an old farmhouse takes a frightening turn with the arrival of some unexpected guests. Image Entertainment releases the DVD and Blu-ray May 10, with anamorphic 1.78:1 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound on the former and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio on the latter, accompanied by a making-of featurette, deleted scenes and the trailer. Retail price is $27.97 for the DVD, $29.97 for the Blu-ray.

Also on tap from Image is THE INHERITANCE, written and directed by Robert O’Hara and starring genre veteran Keith David, Golden Brooks, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER’s D.B. Woodside, Rochelle Aytes and Darrin Dewitt Henson. The story concerns the supernatural terrors that befall five cousins when they gather to claim the titular windfall; the movie hits DVD and Blu-ray April 12, with anamorphic 1.85:1 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound/DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio respectively. The only extra is a trailer; retail prices are $27.97 for the DVD and $29.97 for the Blu-ray. THE INHERITANCE premieres this Friday, February 18 at 7:40 p.m. as part of Culver City, CA’s Pan African Film Festival; the screening, which will be attended by David, Brooks and others, will take place at the Culver Plaza Theatre (9919 Washington Boulevard).
• IFC Films and MPI Media Group have set DVD dates for a pair of imported chillers: Federico Zampaglione’s made-in-Italy, spoken-in-English SHADOW arrives March 15, while Philip Ridley’s British HEARTLESS streets April 12. Both discs will retail for $24.98; specs and special features, if any, have yet to be confirmed. Look for an interview with Zampaglione on SHADOW in Fango #302, on sale in March, and see our HEARTLESS review here.

• A clutch of familiar horror-film actors are featured in EMERGING PAST, coming from Spectra Records May 17. Writer/director Thomas J. Churchill’s movie stars Krista Grotte from THE UH-OH SHOW and BRAINJACKED, along with THE LOST BOYS’ Brooke McCarter, FRIGHT NIGHT’s Stephen Geoffreys, HALLOWEEN’s Tony Moran and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2’s Steve Dash (as Detective Voorhees!); the music and several of the songs were written by Gerard McMann (a.k.a. G Tom Mac of LOST BOYS fame). The DVD will include both the 81-minute version (which has played festivals) and a 90-minute extended but with commentary by Churchill. The special features also include:
• Behind-the-scenes documentary
• Katie DiCicco “Mud” music video
• G Tom Mac “Soul I Bare” music video
• Two theatrical trailers
Retail price is just $9.98; Spectra will also be putting out a soundtrack CD, priced at $7.98. Look for exclusive pics and comments on EMERGING PAST at this site soon.

• The last two Gamera films in Shout! Factory’s DVD series, GAMERA VS. ZIGRA (in which the giant turtle fights an equally giant alien shark) and GAMERA: THE SUPER MONSTER (a pastiche feature utilizing stock footage from past battles) are coming on a double-feature DVD March 15. Both movies will be presented in newly restored anamorphic widescreen transfers with Japanese and English soundtracks and behind-the-scenes and publicity photos. Retail price is $19.93.
• Art has also appeared for HUSK and PROWL, the first two movies from the After Dark Originals series to hit DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment (on March 29; see details here). For nature-amok fans, Magnolia Home Entertainment has the Korean killer-boar flick CHAWZ (previously titled CHAW; see review here) coming on the Magnet label April 26 on DVD ($26.98) and Blu-ray ($29.98), while the Syfy creature feature BEHEMOTH attacks DVD from Vivendi April 5 as part of the Maneater Series, priced at $19.97.
