New York City’s ever-genre-friendly Film Society of Lincoln Center has a great assortment of fright fare in the Film Comment Selects festival it’s hosting Friday, February 18-Thursday, March 3. A number of them will be sneak-previewing ahead of their theatrical releases.

Among the most notable are INSIDIOUS, the haunted-house chiller by the SAW team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell that’s been winning raves (including ours) ever since its Toronto Film Festival debut last fall. It’ll be showing as a closing-night feature on the 3rd at 8:45 p.m. On the first night, the 18th at 11 p.m., the Rutger Hauer-starring bloodbath HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN (pictured left) screens, fresh from its enthusiastically received Sundance showings, with an intro and Q&A with director Jason Eisener.

Also making a personal appearance will be John Landis, for a sneak preview of his period comedy-thriller BURKE AND HARE (starring Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as the titular graverobbers) Thursday the 3rd at 6:15 p.m. Two noteworthy serial-killer films from Asia are also on the bill: Kim Jee-woon’s I SAW THE DEVIL, about the extreme revenge inflicted by a secret agent on his fiancée’s murderer (see review here), Sunday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m., and Sion Sono’s COLD FISH, about the owner of a tropical-fish store who enters into a homicidal alliance with a fellow dealer, Thursday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. and Tuesday, March 1 at 8:45 p.m.

Fans of the outrageous won’t want to miss Peter Geyer’s KLAUS KINSKI: JESUS CHRIST THE SAVIOR, featuring the actor delivering a self-written monologue based on the life of Christ and going crazy from the resulting heckling, Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3:40 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 24 at 6:15 p.m.; and Alex Cox’s sequel STRAIGHT TO HELL RETURNS, Wednesday, March 2 at 8:30 p.m., with an afterparty following that Cox will attend. And Subway Cinema will be co-presenting a sneak preview of Andrew Lau’s martial-arts actioner LEGEND OF THE FIST: THE RETURN OF CHEN ZHEN on Friday, Feb. 25 at 10:45 p.m. The movies will be shown at the Walter Reade Theater (65th Street near Amsterdam Avenue); for more information and to order tickers for all the Film Comment Selects movies, click here.
