Universal and Rogue Pictures’ THE STRANGERS was a surprise 2008 hit, pulling in more than $50 million at the domestic box office and around $82 million worldwide. Sounds like perfect sequel material, so where’s the follow-up? Well, the original’s writer-director Bryan Bertino has completed a script, but it seems the project is now in limbo.
THE STRANGERS is a simple but effectively tense and creepy story about a young couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) who are menaced by three unknown, masked invaders at their remote vacation home. The open ending left room for a sequel, and according to ShockTilYouDrop, French visual FX artist and short film director Laurent Briet was attached to helm THE STRANGERS 2 back in spring 2009. Filming was scheduled to commence in fall ’09, but that never happened, and now Relativity Media (which bought Rogue Pictures in 2009) is supposedly figuring out if a follow-up is the right choice for them.
In Bertino’s script, Tyler would return for a brief appearance, but the story focuses on a new family of four who are terrorized by the three Strangers at a trailer park. While that isn’t the most original concept and seems very similar to the first film’s setup, the sequel would eschew THE STRANGERS’ subtlety in favor of more visceral shocks and slasher scares.
There’s still time for this project to be greenlit (come on—CABIN FEVER 2 finally got released this year!), and sequels and remakes are hot commodities nowadays, so stay tuned for more info on THE STRANGERS 2.
