There’s been Smell-O-Vision and, thanks to John Waters, Odorama, and now Tommy Wirkola (pictured), the Norwegian filmmaker behind the Nazi zombie opus DEAD SNOW, is making scents out of the filmmaking experience again with KURT WAGLE AND THE LEGEND OF THE FJORD WITCH.
Screen Daily reports that Wirkola’s BLAIR WITCH PROJECT parody/mockumentary, which opens today in its home country, is accompanied by assorted odors keyed to certain scenes. ”In the theater your sense of smell is usually reserved for your neighbour’s popcorn; we want to use it for the ‘complete cinema experience,’ ” Wirkola tells the trade. “Most of the scents are nice and cozy, like wood and moor—others are less pleasant: one will remind you of, eh, bodily waste.” The story concerns Kurt Wagle, a retired fisherman, venturing into the woods in search of his gay son Tordenskjold, who he believes has been captured by the Fjord Witch. DEAD SNOW’s Stig Frode Henriksen (who also scripted with Wirkola), Bjørn Sundquist and Jeppe Laursen return to star in this one, along with Martin Hykkerud, Kristoffer Joner (the lead in this year’s After Dark Horrorfest release HIDDEN), Cecilie A. Mosli and Julia Schacht.
