Back in 1990, author and film critic (and Fango contributor) Maitland McDonagh first published BROKEN MIRRORS/BROKEN MINDS: THE DARK DREAMS OF DARIO ARGENTO, an in-depth study of the Italian maestro of horror cinema. Now she’s let us know that an expanded and updated version of the book is on the way.
“This is the first new edition in 15 years,” McDonagh tells us; it’s coming this spring from University of Minnesota Press. “It’s the first university press edition, even though the earliest version of BROKEN MIRRORS/BROKEN MINDS was a Columbia University Master’s thesis written in 1986. U of Minn approached me [about revisiting her book], and I leapt at the opportunity. The last edition only went up to TRAUMA, so it was badly dated, and the fact that people were still buying used copies suggested there was an audience for a new BROKEN MIRRORS/BROKEN MINDS. I mean, hey, I bought all three editions of Kim Newman’s NIGHTMARE MOVIES!
“The expanded version contains significant revisions,” she continues. “The chapter on SUSPIRIA and INFERNO, for example, now incorporates the long-delayed completion of the Three Mothers trilogy with 2007’s MOTHER OF TEARS/LA TERZA MADRE. A detailed new essay picks up where the 1995 edition left off, examining Argento’s films from THE STENDHAL SYNDROME [1996] through last year’s GIALLO, and addressing his volatile creative relationship with his daughter Asia. The credits section is also updated to include Argento’s work since 1995.” The 296-page book, which includes over 80 stills, can be pre-ordered from the University of Minnesota Press website and other on-line bookstores.
