Having conquered the tween music scene and made her dramatic acting debut in this year’s THE LAST SONG, Miley Cyrus is celebrating her impending 18th birthday by branching out into genre territory. She’ll be starring in a youth-centric chiller called WAKE for Paramount.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the MTV Films production is based on the young-adult supernatural novel (the first of three in a series) by Lisa McMann, about a teenager named Janie who gets pulled unwillingly into the dreams of others. This has led her to isolate herself from her peers, but she begins to open up to another loner named Cabel—until she enters his dreamscape and sees him as a burned monster committing murder. Christopher Landon, whose credits include DISTURBIA and BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE, is scripting the film, whose producers include the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY team of Steven Schneider and Jason Blum; no word yet on whether they’re adding scenes in which Janie sings. Paramount and MTV also plan to make features out of McMann’s follow-up books FADE and GONE.
