Some of John Carpenter’s fans feel that his last truly worthwhile credit was 1998’s VAMPIRES, so they’ll be especially happy to hear that he’s returning to bloodsucker territory. He has been attached to direct FANGLAND for DAS Films and Blumhouse Productions.
Variety reports that FANGLAND, based on the novel of the same title by John Marks, is a variation on Bram Stoker’s DRACULA about a New York City TV producer named Evangeline Harker who travels to Transylvania to interview Romanian arms dealer Ion Torgu for a news program. He proves to be a “descendant” of the Count and vampirizes her before traveling to Manhattan, while she winds up in a Transylvanian monastery with her memory a blank. Mark Wheaton, who worked on the scripts for THE MESSENGERS and the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake and penned Hideo Nakata’s upcoming VOICE FROM THE STONE, wrote the screenplay, and Sriram Das and Jason Blum are producing. Hilary Swank was once set to play Evangeline, but it’s not clear if she’s still attached. Carpenter currently has the asylum-based chiller THE WARD, starring Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Mamie Gummer, Lyndsy Fonseca, Mika Boorem and Jared Harris, in postproduction; Blum’s current projects include Oren Peli’s AREA 51, James Wan’s INSIDIOUS and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2.
