Director Barry Levinson has won acclaim, Oscars and big box office with major-studio films ranging from RAIN MAN to BUGSY to DISCLOSURE, and it was thus surprising to see him helming a found-footage horror movie—a subgenre that’s usually the province of up-and-comers. And he was able to bring a different approach to THE BAY, which he discussed extensively with Fango.

While bringing to the screen popular monsters from the video game—Red Pyramid, the nurses—and several cast members from the previous movie, the 3D sequel SILENT HILL: REVELATION also provides a showcase for a couple of new faces: stars Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington, both of whom spoke to Fango at the recent New York Comic-Con.

REPULSION, Polish director Roman Polanski’s answer to Alfred Hitchock’s PSYCHO, also follows the violent decline of a lonely, troubled person haunted by the demons of the mind. Released in 1965 and part of Polanski’s influential “apartment trilogy” (followed by 1968’s ROSEMARY’S BABY and 1976’s THE TENANT), REPULSION begins a special nine-day engagement with a new, sharp 35mm print at New York City’s Film Forum (209 West Houston; [212] 727-8110) from October 31 through November 8. Named one of FANGORIA’s Top 300 horror films of all time in issue #300, REPULSION remains essential viewing for fright aficionados.

Not only is the world ALONE IN THE DARK inhabits, fittingly, insane, but it firmly believes so is ours. Twice in Jack Sholder's feature debut, Donald Pleasence’s kooky asylum head Dr. Leo Bain makes reference to this. “What do you expect? It’s a violent society,” he tells Dr. Dan Potter about the past exploits of the “men on the third floor.” Later, still defending the murderous psychopaths—even after they’ve broken out and already killed—he shouts, “Alright they’re crazy, isn’t everybody?” Once the frenzied picture reaches its incredible, intense final scene, it would really seem so.

Perhaps the single best thing about THE WALKING DEAD is that it isn’t a show about zombies, it’s a show about human beings and how nightmarish circumstances test their humanity every day. One of the pleasures of the series is watching how these characters cope with the devastated world they’ve inherited, and arguably none have provided a more potent study of what happens to even the best of us in extreme circumstances than Andrew Lincoln as former lawman-turned-leader of a ragtag band of survivors, Rick Grimes.

If there’s any teen actress with serious genre qualifications these days, it’s Chloë Grace Moretz, whose big-screen résumé stretches from 2005’s THE AMITYVILLE HORROR to this year’s DARK SHADOWS, with lots of horrific stops in between. But there was one question regarding her starring role in the new film version of Stephen King’s classic novel CARRIE that Fango felt compelled to raise upon sitting down with her at the recent New York Comic-Con.

A tiny, bespectacled girl backs into a silent bedroom and shakes her sister awake. In a panicked whisper, the girl warns her groggy sibling that “Mama” has returned. The kids scramble down the stairs and rush toward the relative safety of the front door—but something is there, waiting. A weird, walking cobweb of a woman freezes as she spots the girls, then surges at them in a horrifyingly disjointed, reptilian scuttle.
