At Worcester, MA’s Rock and Shock convention, Fango got to speak with actor/filmmaker Corbin Bernsen (pictured), who was screening his latest directorial effort, the zombie thriller DEAD AIR (hitting DVD today from Anthem Pictures). He gave us the scoop that he’s got another undead opus planned, this time with a unique sports-oriented twist.

“It’s called THREE STRIKES, YOU’RE DEAD,” Bernsen reveals, explaining that fan enthusiasm for certain of his movies helped inspire the concept. “I come to these conventions and meet people, and there are two things they like: They enjoy horror, but they’re also into the MAJOR LEAGUE movies I was in. And this is kind of a revenge thing—I heard they’re doing MAJOR LEAGUE 4 and they aren’t including my character, and I got kind of pissed off, so I thought, ‘I’m gonna get ’em back. I’m gonna do a zombie baseball movie.’

“It’s set about 30 years in the future in Pittsburgh—a little tribute to George Romero and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD,” he continues. “The undead have been managed a little bit through drug therapy, and created their own sports leagues and rock bands and things like that. As baseball is starting to slump, those who run the sport decide to have a playoff of the World Series champions against the Zombie League champions. And of course, you know how fans are when they get crazy, so…”

Despite the outrageous premise, Bernsen says he plans to combine humor and straight horror in this project. “It’s not total satire,” he explains. “It’s also about the integration of zombies into the fabric of America, so there’s a little bit of an echo of the racial problems of the ’60s. It’ll have a little bit of everything; there will be some funny stuff like in MAJOR LEAGUE.” And while he’s still developing the characters for his scenario, he’s already thinking about casting. “I have one guy in mind, if he’ll ever do it: I’d love Randy Johnson, who’s pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks [and is currently with the San Francisco Giants], to be the zombie pitcher. I want real baseball players in this movie.” We’ll keep you informed of further developments; Bernsen and DEAD AIR will both be appearing at Fango’s inaugural Trinity of Terrors convention in Las Vegas this weekend.
