“You know, this is not a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET or a new FRIDAY THE 13TH or something like that,” says director Bousman, who took the reins for the second, third and fourth SAW films as well as the bizarre gore-musical REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. The original MOTHER’S DAY, he says, “is a movie that very few people know. So this was a chance to actually remold the clay, as it were, from what the original MOTHER’S DAY is.”
“It’s not a huge zombie movie where you have something every single day, or a massive prosthetics show, but there is quite a bit of stuff in it,” says makeup FX artist Francois Dagenais (another veteran of the SAW saga) as he labors over one of the movie’s gorier surprises (the nature of which cannot here be revealed). But Dagenais clearly enjoys his work: When asked what aspect of his job satisfies him most, he grins and readily admits, “I like the gore.”
The cast features a number of horror-remake veterans, from MY BLOODY VALENTINE’s Jaime King to SORORITY ROW’s Briana Evigan and Matt O’Leary to a cameo from the 21st century’s own Leatherface, Andrew Bryniarski. The filmmakers are keeping a lid on the latter’s exact role, but Bousman reveals that he plays “Someone who comes across some bodies…I can tell you that much.” Another redux veteran is Rebecca De Mornay, who plays the fearsome Mother. After finding fame as a lady of the evening in RISKY BUSINESS, De Mornay proved she could be as evil and threatening as anyone in THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, and in 1997 broadened her genre experience in Mick Garris’ televersion of THE SHINING. Now she’s ruling the roost as another in a long line of murderous cinematic moms.
“It’s kind of a compilation of all the worst things a mother could do, packed into one woman who simultaneously thinks she’s the best mother who has ever lived,” De Mornay laughs. “So it’s kind of about how parents get it wrong. When you really hurt and punish and subjugate kids, what do you get? You get these violent, depraved killers.”
Actor Shawn Ashmore, who battled killer vines in THE RUINS, plays one of the nefarious family’s hostage-victims, and has a dripping makeup cut on his forehead to prove it. Along with most of the other actors, he admits to not having seen the 1980 version, but says, “I’ve heard everything about it. When I originally started talking to Darren about it, he brought up a lot of the aspects of that film, and obviously changes have been made. But there are definitely a few throwbacks and links for people who know the first one, which is kind of cool.”

Is it just me, or do Ike and Addley look like they just escaped from Dawson's Creek? What happened to the dirty greasy rednecks of the original?

There hasn't been one remake in the last ten years that even slightly lives up to the original. Why can't these assholes stop trying to ride the coattails of great movies? Are there no original thinkers left? If people are gonna waste money making bad movies, then they might as well try to make something new instead of shitting on classics.
