This is starting to make us nervous… Fango just got the word that Universal Pictures’ new version of THE WOLFMAN, which was originally slated for an April 3 release this year and then got shifted to November 6, has been bumped a second time. Now it seems we’re going to have to wait till 2010 to check it out.THE WOLFMAN, starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, directed by Joe Johnston and featuring makeup FX by Rick Baker, is currently slated to hit theaters next February 12. That gets it out of the way of Summit’s competing (albeit younger-skewing) lycanthropicture THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, which arrives Nov. 20, and has it following Joss Whedon’s much-anticipated THE CABIN IN THE WOODS by a week. You can see the film’s official site here. In WOLFMAN’s place, Universal will open the Milla Jovovich-starrer THE 4TH KIND Nov. 6; directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, it has Jovovich playing a psychologist investigating strange disappearances in a small Alaskan town.

Good and bad. It would unfortunately lose to Twilight and The Vampire's Assistant in the box office and success would not last long. I would have rathered it open at the beginning of October so that it gives a chance for Halloween II to die down and will give The Wolf Man some breathing room to make money before the next Twilight film is released. I have waited long enough and think it should have a fall release, but I mostly want it to succeed so I can see the other Universal Monster films get really good updated remakes.
