I just ordered it on Blu-Ray. Can't wait to see it on Halloween night!

At our Weekend of Horrors convention that just wrapped up in New York City, writer/director Michael Dougherty revealed that his much-anticipated fright film TRICK ’R TREAT will finally be seeing DVD and Blu-ray release in October, following festival bookings this summer/fall (see previous item here). Fango grabbed him for a few moments behind the scenes to find out just what we’ll be seeing supplement-wise on those discs.
“They’ll be out just in time for Halloween,” Dougherty tells us of the Warner Home Video releases. “There will be a standard-edition DVD which will pretty much just have the movie, and then the Blu-ray disc will have all the special features, ’cause that’s the way things are moving these days. There will be a documentary, the animated short film, SEASON’S GREETINGS, that kind of inspired the feature, deleted scenes, outtakes, all sorts of fun. And there will be a few different audio commentaries that are still in the works; I don’t know exactly who’ll be on them yet, but definitely me and hopefully some of the cast.”

Throughout TRICK ’R TREAT’s long road to release, Dougherty has appreciated the support of the fans who have been waiting along with him for the All Hallow’s anthology to receive proper exposure. “A big thank-you to them,” he says. “I’ve gotten all the messages, all the e-mails, pretty much seen all the message board postings and read all the reviews, and they’ve kept me going. It has been a real grassroots campaign, the type you don’t normally see for movies anymore. It started when we first screened the film at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon festival in Austin, back in December ’07. There were a pretty good amount of great reviews [including ours, which we’ve rerun here] that came out of that; it went dormant for a while, and then we pulled it out again last October and screened it in LA, New York and Spain, and it just started building from there. The reviews that have popped up and the word-of-mouth have been fantastic. They have really helped keep the film alive.”
This has been particularly satisfying, he adds, given that the film “is a labor of love. Despite it being a horror movie, it’s very personal in a way, because so many of the stories and moments in the film were drawn from my own experiences on Halloween, in a weird way. Also, I’m obsessed with the holiday. So it has been a passion project—a truly long one.”
So now that the fruit of that passion is finally reaching the end of its saga, does Dougherty have a follow-up in mind? “I’m already working on the next one,” he reveals. “It’s an animated project that I can’t talk too much about—but it involves big monsters.”

My family of four will not be buyng the blu-ray as it is silly to spend twice the amount on a movie. I'm 28 and have a world of responsibilities, "keeping up with the times" is not one of them. I am dissapointed that there are no special features on the dvd, and big-shot movie people, think everything is going the way of the blu-ray, but in regular-people America, I don't know anyone who owns a blu-ray disk. We would rather pay our rent, utilities, and buy food for our families. Any extra cash usually gets saved or spent on an awesome movie to entertain our little non-blu-ray happy lives. Everyone we know, feels that blu-ray is heading the way of the laser-disk, and we laugh at the kids who spend twice as much on a blu-ray. The quality of the picture is not a giant seller for us, it looks fabulous on our high-def tv and dvd player.

Come on!! Are you guys kidding me?? I have seen Blu-ray players for as low as $150, stop being so cheap and annie up and get with the present cry baby's. You guys call yourself movie buffs and your still watching lamb dvd format?? Special Features are on Blu-ray for this movie and not DVD for a reason, you get what u pay for cheap skates!!!!

Okay, this is utter crap. And for all who say BD is phasing out DVD. **LIES!** In this current market, DVDs are more profitable for being the cheaper format. A cheap Blu-Ray disc is still at a new DVD's price at most physical outlets. For the record, not ALL movies look better on Blu-Ray. I watched Harry Potter and Evil Dead on BD, and it actually looks WORSE then it should. Everything is so tuned up that it looks like the film was shot on a cheap DV cam. And that goes the same for films even being newly released today. So far, the only good BD's I've seen were "The Dark Knight" "Ultraviolet (though not a fan of the film" or practically most action films are mostly adaptable for this format. Blu Ray could spruce up if given a few more years, otherwise, this may go of the laserdisc for all i know =/

Are you people crazy?!?! Blu-Ray is absolutely the way of the future. DVD replaced VHS and Blu-Ray will do the same exact thing. His comment was that the blu-ray (the current leading technology) will include the special features because thats the way things are moving...there is a huge difference in quality between DVD and Blu-Ray and the price of the equipment, the blu-ray discs, and the hdtv tv's have all dropped DRAMATICALLY so dont whine about how expensive they are. Ugh sorry for the rant but SERIOUSLY people COME ON.

This seriously ticks me off. I would have to get an HDTV set as well as a Blu-Ray player in order to watch the "Special Edition" dvd of this movie. Not going to happen. I am not interested in a Blu-ray player. $30 for the dvd's??? No frickin' way!

I see more people buying and renting DVDs these days. But since Blue-Ray does cost more, of course I think more features should be included. But still, the standard DVD should have the standard behind-the-scenes, trailer and commentaries. But it really doesn't matter, I just want to see the movie; and plus, all the bonus features are going to end up on Youtube anyway, so it really doesn't matter.

I'm very with the times. The times that are me not having a job and the economy in recession. In these modern times I really don't need to buy a Blu-Ray player right now. haha...it's sad but true.

This is a colossal disappointment and a gigantic middle finger to the fans.
Contrary to what people(and studios)think, Blu-Ray is not yet(and probably never will be)the leading preference to take over DVD. I hear about it on the web and such, but in real life?. With the actual people?. Never. DVD still seems to be the leading choice among people, and it's what I see people getting and what I hear them talking about. Not Blu-Ray!.
That said, this is a mistake. Fans have been waiting a few years for this, and have been SUPPORTING the film, and this is how we are treated?. As for the "that's how things are moving these days", I don't think so. I have never come across a problem or situation like that ever. Everything on the Blu-Ray and not the DVD?. Not that I have come across.
But this is such disheartening and disrespectful news that I am leaning towards not getting the bare bones disc at all. The storm is already brewing....

If you can't see a difference between DVD and Blu-Ray quality, that means one of two things: You're not watching blu-ray on an HDTV or you're absolutely blind.
Do I think special features should be removed from DVD releases? Not really, but judging by how many people actually WATCH them, and the fact that most hardcore film fans already own Blu-Ray players, they are making the right choice to save money on that. Think of how many people are pirating these films to begin with.
I'll get the Blu-Ray, thank you very much.

I own a Blu-Ray player and you definitely see the difference what it comes to sound and picture quality, but it's useless unless you have a LCD or Plasma widescreen HD TV connected to it. So I'm pretty happy that the movie will be on Blu-Ray, although it sucks that the regular DVD won't have any special features.

Get with the times people DVD is like VHS now! Blu-ray Rules!!!

i'm happy that the movie is coming out but no special features on the standard one what the hell is that about?(i love watching behind the scenes type of stuff so thats why i'm pissed about this) what makes Blu ray owners so damn special? if mike had nothing to do with this then it's just another way that corperations are trying to screw people into buying things they don't want.
but i do feel that this is a bit of a screw you to the fans that have been supporting this movie for so long.

I agree, i just want to see the movie and the extras on dvd, i do not know ONE person that owns a blu ray, and I refuse to get one.. what gives? Have the big shot rich people taken over the small features like this one too and we get left out?
-
|2009-06-10 17:23:41 Jay
The funny thing is, I haven't upgraded to Blu-Ray yet because of the abundance of Blu-Ray discs that are missing some or all of the bonus features that are on the DVD version!
*sigh*

I was able to get a Blu-Ray playeer fortunately and I will obviously pick this up. Dougherty may not have control over what happens with the discs. It may be his movie, but things don't always work out as planned. If they did, we all would have seen this film a couple years ago. So cheer up people and be lucky that this is actually viewable in any form. Not watching something like this won't do anything but create more creative horror films from getting made.
-
|2009-06-10 15:56:52 Horror Writer
Since when is things moving towards Blu-ray? I don't know ONE person who owns one. But EVERYONE I know has a DVD player, even my mum!

I'm a little disappointed this film won't be seeing a theatrical release, but I'm happy I will FINALLY get to see it!! Surely a treat in time for the best day of the year

i agree with Frogger, I too, am so tired of the "disk" wars, sorry I am happy with DVD right now. I am with the 21 century, but I'd rather spend money on my films than more equipment to play them on.
I am pleased, no excited, this is finally seeing the light of day, but hell, I'd pay for DVD if it is double disk. (I often get ripped off with the (2 disk special release) which is nothing but a portable ripoff of usually 5 bucks.
-
|2009-06-10 13:58:30 Dolly Dahmer
While I'm thrilled the movie is finally being released, I am very irritated that the DVD will be bare bones. I don't plan on buying a Blu-Ray player in the near future, and will NOT be buying TRT on dvd now.
-
|2009-06-10 13:23:44 Frogger
All of this blu-ray exclusive special features stuff is really starting to piss me off. Some of us are just fine with DVDs, and there's no reason all of those things he listed can't fit on a standard DVD. This is one final Eff You to everyone who's been waiting YEARS for this movie.
