FX artist turned director Dean Jones got in touch with comments and a couple of exclusive photos from a promotional video (see below) for his upcoming sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 2003 TOOLBOX MURDERS remake. You can also have a look at that promo clip for the movie, titled TBK: THE TOOLBOX MURDERS, at the bottom of this page.
The cast is shaping up well, with a number of genre favorites confirmed. Jones has secured Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Tony Todd, Red West and Brian Krause, and the makeup vet is extremely excited about his vision for his first turn behind the camera. “My career has given me the fortunate opportunity to have worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest directors, like David Lynch, Mike Figgis, Gore Verbinski and Tobe Hooper,” he tells us. “Through my working relationships with these icons, I’ve had an enormous education in filmmaking.”
Some of those lessons were learned with Hooper on TBK’s predecessor. “In 2003, Tobe gave me the opportunity to direct 2nd unit on the original TOOLBOX MURDERS,” he says, “and now I’m deeply honored to walk in the footsteps of the master by directing and writing the sequel. By the end of shooting TOOLBOX, he became an enormous influence on me to pursue a career in directing.”
Jones became fond of that film’s villain, and the seed was soon planted for the follow-up. “Since I had created and designed the look and appearance of the killer from the ’03 film, I felt I had deeper understanding for this character,” he says. “I understood his pain, his suffering and his desire and enthusiasm to kill. I began to develop a backstory behind his horrific appearance and personality, and the significance behind those tortured eyes. While directing and developing 2nd-unit shots for Tobe, I was exploring certain behavioral activities of this unfortunate creature. I kept all these thoughts in mind, thinking I just might write and direct a sequel someday. There is so much more to this creature than meets the eye.”
Serving as a producer on the movie (along with Jones, his brother Starr and Chad Cole) as well as its cinematographer and editor is filmmaker Richard Gale, who has won widespread praise for his horror shorts THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER WITH THE EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT WEAPON (for which Jones did the FX) and CRITICIZED. Gale collaborated on the promo clip with Jones, and tells us, “I’ve been having a blast working with Dean, whom I’ve known for over 10 years, on this project. He’s got some very, very dark and twisted ideas for this film, and intends to make it a wild ride. I served as director of photography, co-producer and editor on the promo, and we had a great time shooting it—Jeffrey Combs and Brian Krause were a pleasure to work with, and I’m looking forward to helping create more mayhem in the near future!”

I'm thrilled at this news. It looks great. The "remake" was such an original concept its a shame it's referred to as a remake. I loved Hooper's film and it is one of my favorites. Its nice to see it bloom into a franchise.

Uh, I dunno. This looks kind of pretentious in a bad way. I think of the Toolbox guy as a raw, almost pre-verbal monster. Definitely not a guy who'd carve silly messages into people's bodies. Or go walking around on the street with his toolbox. I can barely even imagine him leaving that building. Namedropping all these real serial killers for 2+ minutes in this trailer for the sake of hype is also likely to backfire..
