Indie chiller gives you MENTAL SCARS

News - Film News

mentalscarsthumbFilmmakers Mischa Perez and Richard Myles of Viper Productions got in touch with comments and some exclusive photos from their new fright film MENTAL SCARS, which was lensed in Indiana and recently premiered in Raleigh, NC. The movie stars Myles (who has previously played Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees in fan films) as David Taggart, the last survivor of a massacred Native American tribe who lurks in a junkyard built over his people’s burial ground, and murders unwary intruders.

“MENTAL SCARS was a monumental project for me, because I played so many important roles in addition to David Taggart,” says Myles, who also scripted the movie with John Dalton, composed the score and was one of the executive producers. “I had to get used to wearing the makeup and bandages all over my face. We shot the film last May, so the weather was fickle. I have never done anything to Mother Nature for her to be so mean to us! Sometimes it was nice and cool, other days were scorching hot. To wear all the black attire in conjunction with the facial makeup was unbearable at times; I kept on thinking to myself, ‘When is this going to be over?’ The first time I began to put aside my troubles about this discomfort was after I saw how incredible the dailies looked. I was in total disbelief and shock with the level of clarity, crispness and overall professional cinematic feel they exuded. That was definitely the pivotal realization for me that we were shooting a ‘real’" film. Subsequently, I learned how to cope with the makeup, and just become David Taggart, and boy, was that a lot of fun!”

“MENTAL SCARS was a huge undertaking,” seconds Perez, who directed, photographed and edited the movie in addition to also serving as an executive producer. “Both Richard and I found it quite amazing; most people don’t realize the amount of laborious hours it takes to make a film. It’s even more challenging when you have a small crew and limited budget. I’ve noticed that many moviemakers use the term ‘film’ quite loosely—and incorrectly, for that matter. Most young independents shoot on video, whether it be hi-def or digital—but it’s still not film! Shooting on 35mm is truly a whole different world. The amount of people and equipment you need, the level of skill and expertise required to fine-tune your vision, and the incredible patience you must adopt and endure working with 35mm is an unforgettable experience! I do believe that the digital format is great, but there’s still nothing like actually shooting on film.”

“I now have a much greater appreciation for all movies shot on 35mm,” adds Myles, “because I know the laborious energy it takes to make one. You have a certain look you want to achieve, and you need to work in concert with your cinematographer, special effects artist, editor and sound people. Mitchell Lipsiner was our DP, who brought 35-plus years experience to our film, and believe me—it shows. Then we had an incredible special effects supervisor, Michael Jones, who made the Native American scenes so authentic that I had to constantly remind myself they weren’t real. The wonderful Jennifer Smith took care of the cast’s makeup, and got everyone looking like Hollywood material. Our editor Phil Clark did an amazing job putting the pieces together, and our incredible sound designer Benjamin Martin put MENTAL SCARS into 5.1 Surround and edited a killer trailer [see it below], which sparked interest from professionals from all over the world.”

Myles himself wound up assuming the role of composer strictly for budgetary reasons; he admits that prior to taking on MENTAL SCARS’ music, “I had no experience playing an instrument. When you make an independent film, you have no choice but to force yourself to adopt new trades. One day, I got on my Mac computer and started playing with the keyboard. Before I knew it, I began making loops, and two months later I ended up composing over 100 tracks. The miraculous thing is that it matched perfectly to what Mischa and I had envisioned for the film. The whole experience was a major shocker for me, especially when professional critics who screened the film complimented the score. This whole experience has taught me an invaluable lesson, and that is: You never know what talent lies beneath the surface—all you have to do is believe in yourself.”

The cast of MENTAL SCARS also includes Teresa Alexandria, 48 HRS.’ Sonny Landham, Chris Elbert, David Lammert, Rebecca Ogoman and Chelsea McLean, and Perez praises their adaptability to the vagaries of low-budget production. “Despite the constant script changes, the cast never fell behind, and mastered their new lines as quickly as we could dish them out. They really pulled this project off on a level I was not expecting.”

“I really enjoyed working with Sonny Landham, who plays my father, Chief Bear, in the film,” Myles says, “because he was a gentle giant who became a paternal figure to me. He was the nicest, most humble and down-to-earth individual you could ever meet. It was really strange to sit next to him while we were both getting our makeup done, thinking that this guy had been in PREDATOR!”

MENTAL SCARS is currently shopping for distribution, and Perez reveals that a sequel is already in the works to continue David Taggart’s murderous misadventures. “I commend everyone who really put forth the effort to make an incredible film,” Perez says, “and some of them will hopefully be returning for part two.” You can see MENTAL SCARS’ official website (which will soon feature an interview with genre fave Michael Berryman on its Press page) here.

This page was brought to my attention. I am very, very displeased with what has been said here. I am going to say some stuff and it will not be pretty.

First off I want an apology from those who have called me a backstabber, a liar, and untrustworthy. You have no right to say such untruthful slanderous things about me. You should hang your head in shame.

First off I did my job 100% and more for Mental Scars while it was being shot in Indiana. I was doing things for this project before it even had day one in Indiana.

Anyone on set can let you know that I was there everyday, did my job, helped other people, I basically bent over backwards to do what I could to make this project run as smooth as it could for what we had to work with.

Yes it was very hard at times and I had lots dumped into my lap since by Richard Myles and Mischa Perez. Things changed daily due to the weather, cast, crew, ect. But I took on those extra tasks when nobody else would. Plus being hired help it was ha...

Alright, lets all take a deep breath, and relax...Ok, I am done, now my rant. One thing is certain, you violate people's rights by calling them faggots, homos, fatso, etc. iand threatening to beat them is crossing the line. Matt Myers is an old friend of mine, and I was pissed off that Ivan Rogers in his drunken state thought he could talk to Matt that way, and get away with it. What is that drunk going to do, sue everyone in the fucken world who will expose his drunk ass for what he did, the drunk would not stand a chance in court. Now I can imagine the news getting a hold of this. They would have a field day. The black community would be in an uproar if they knew he called them "crusty negros". I need to watch "forget me drunk" i am sorry, "Forgive me father" . The acting was embarrassing, Read the reviews on IMDB and mojos...they give his corny shit D...LOL...I would give it a wopping Z-.LOL.

we all know david suckdillo is the author behind some of these comments. I know 4 a fact Ivan is a drunk, bad temper, and has a bad reputation. My cousin worked at a restaurant that hated when Ivan the Terrible would come in. He called blacks crusty Negros is offesnive to me as a black person. Ivan is scum, and his movies suck like his career. He called people faggots, David you dumb fuck, u think that is ok right? U choose to not address that, you sell out to the gay community.
Ivan the liquor stores are closed LOL! =)

I LOVE this movie website. It bespeaks class, professionalism, and spookiness. The producers are already a hot topic on facebook which I am Richard Myles' friend (Yeah). I learned of this website by a man who was driving a purple BMW and had a license plate with lights that talked about this movie. In my hometown, Raleigh,NC.
This Ivan guy sounds pathetic. He called people faggots is TERRIBLE, and to smell like alcohol while trying working on the set of Mental Scars is the worst thing a person could do. I would have called the police on him. And he was threatening people, I wonder what he said, but you know what, I have heard enough already to be disgusted. How could he call a gay person faggot and think that was ok. WOW :grr:

This is for Ivan if you are reading. I am gay, you are a prick and calling people faggots is disgusting, you piece of shit! Too bad the producers did not fire the ass before he quit. Piece of shit, should be ashamed of himself as ugly as he is with all his acne scars on his face to be calling people faggots, and being a DRUNK. Thank you Drake for telling me about this asshole, I am deeply offended. I respect the producers for who they are, and heard great things about them crew such as Lucky and Jason Hawkins.

    Corry open and proud!!!!!!

This should be about Mental Scars and not about Ivan Rogers but I want to put in my cents in. I worked at a local restaurant that Ivan comes to and when I was there the staff would fight over who would serve Ivan. He has a temper and likes to flirt with the ladies. He does drink but not as bad as people are telling here. He is also a very good tipper. I never liked the guy but you have to serve a customer.

As for David I got to know him and worked with him on Mental Scars, he is a nice guy. He did the job as Script Supervisor and all the other things that he did for Mental Scars. I have never heard anyone in Indy say that David is a bad person or that they do not trust him. David was one of the first people on set everyday and one of the last to leave I know because I was there. The crew on Mental Scars have only said great things about him how he helps out and is always there when needed. Why would it matter if he likes Ivan? If you knew him you would see how liked he is. I would ...

I looked at Ivan's IMDB...corny as hell. I have never heard of him. He looks drunk on his website and he has a wine glass in his hand lol. You peeps are right..that I love to drink, but I wouldnt do it before I shoot a movie, and I would not certainly conduct business meetings when I am drunk or stoned. And I dont care how mad you get, when you call people racial slurs, homophobic slurs, whatever, your career is over, look at the guy from Seinfelt and he looked like a minority himself with his kinky hair. Anyways, if Ivan called me faggot I would spit in his face..he would not like if someone called him a racial slur..what an idiot. I applaud the producers for allowing this guy to quit, I heard is was a BIG relief when he left...congrats richard and mischa for leave dirt behind! :flame:

    Gregg,

I worked with the producers for only one week because I was still in school, but Richard and mischa were by far the coolest producers to step foot on Indiana soil. David Sychelo was always known in the community to be a liar, and he breached the contract of the producers by releasing photos of MS which shows you what kind of person he is. I never did like David..too faced liar. Ivan called Mathew Myers a "faggot" which offends me because my best friend is gay, but yet David still loves Ivan, and we ALL know David is 100% gay. Ivan is the definition of scum to even think he has a right to call people faggots...very unprofessional. You cannot ignore a bigot! I cannot wait to see MS either :)

I read this entire page and googled David Sycylo since Takemehomelover posted about it. I found his website and searched it and found it. It looks like to me that David has nothing but great things to say about Mental Scars say for a few things. Not everyone can be happy and it looks like from what I read that people worked really hard on this movie.

David saids in his page that Ivan left on his own and was not fired and Mischa Perez took over as director. It sounds like to me that Richard Myles and Mischa Perez were the ones who made problems.

I don't care what went on while making this movie alls I cares about is that I want to see it. When is it coming out?

  • Steve
    avatar
I don't know about this Ivan guy but he sounds like a ass. If anyone drinks on the job before or during should be fired! I only know from what I have heard about Mental Scars and it sounds like there were too many problems with just about everything and after Ivan was fired by the producers things got better.

If I ever met this Ivan I would tell him not to be such a dick to people and kick his ass. I can't belive that anyone would even hire him. The producers did the right thing and fired Ivan. Mental Scars is going to be a kick ass dope movie!

    Peace
  • Lisa  - You are right guys and gals!
    avatar
=) Ok, my 2 cents here. . I have experience idiots too on the set of tv series "Surface" when some of the people were always trying to sue someone for something. Bottom line is anyone doing drugs or alcohol before any shoot should be FIRED period. Not even one drink before you go to work. Not acceptable. When a person does that, they deserve any repercussions coming to them. Having any mind altering substance is putting a film in harms way. Rogers is known to be a heavy drinker here and getting into fights, bars and restaurants owners could tell you that. Many people want nothing to do with because of his reputation, and now knowing he calls people faggots, fat jokes =) =) , and racial slurs, justifies my point!
  • Gal  - Ivan Rogers

Ivan thinks he is big here in Ind, but really he is a nobody. My cousin worked on his film years ago...I think it was forgive me ???? something, anyways, she said he paid her well, but he was very hard o get along with, and he drank alot then too, and was a total prick. I know one thing, Ivan treats people really bad and thinks it is ok, and that he could get away with it because of is nonfruitful career. No one wants to be bothered with a winer who is in denial, and blames everyone else for his problems he causes on his own..BTW congratulations to the producers of Mental Scars.Richard, next time research your cast/crew to avoid bad seeds!

I heard last year from friends who worked on Mental Scares that Richard and Michca were one of the nicest producers to work with. Even when they were stressed they were cool. I also heard here in Indianapolis, In, that Rogers was a real trouble maker. The restaurant my sister works at did not like Rogers, he flirted with her when his old wife was sitting right there. I heard from other movie people hear that Rogers has a bad reputation of causing trouble and trying to always sue people because he is a broke ass pimp who makes a living off of scamming people. He aint nothing but a broke pimp nigga. I never did like him and his movies are corny ass hell LOL. What the hell were the producers thinking to hire him, even I could have told u not to do that! Drake,

I hear ya brother, I would testify on the producers behalf too against any lies the previous director is trying to make. I was on set everyday as well brother, and the facts be told, Mischa did an excellent job as director for MS, we are all happy and relieved when Ivan resigned. He did the crew the biggest favor. I witnessed Ivan drinking before and after the shoot, smelling like alcohol, very hard to work with, controlling, demeaning, abusive to us, threatening physical harm when things did not g his way, called some of the crew people faggots, and called the ladies who did advertisement stuff anti-gay remarks, I am white, but I heard him call "black people" crusty negoids" which is offensive to me as a white person, not to mention to blacks , he was late just about everyday on set,
his drinking was crazy, and Ivan can blame himself when everyone on set knew what he was doing because he had no shame in how he conducted himself...what a pathetic person...now is...

Richard and Micaha were two of the coolest producers I have ever worked with. Some people in this field can be real jerks, and treat you like crap. Richard and Micaha were easy to work with even when there were jerks on the set who had nothing better to do than to start trouble because they wereand still are jealous that these two young guys were living the american dream. These guys were also business smart by having all their paper stuff in order, and the biggest thing that they captured all there business affairs on tape which was very wise I must say especially when people lie about things which will come back legally to take a SHARK bite out of their asses---not smart at all---not smart at all. if these guys ever needed me as a witness to what i experienced and witnessed EVERYDAY on the set, along with my own recordings which I was allowed to do without the producers permission because I was part of the discussions, but I know they would not be upset because the stuff I have w...

Further proof of the "Honor and Respectability" of Richard Myles, Mischa Perez and Viper Productions:

Here are some direct quotes from the blog of David Syczylo, who served as the Script Supervisor for "Mental Scars"

    The Ivan Rogers Situation:

"During the duration of the filming of "Mental Scars" (from May 9, 2008 to May 16, 2008) director Ivan Rogers relieved himself from the project on his own accord due to creative circumstances with Richard Myles and Mischa Perez. It was his decision to be removed from the “Mental Scars” project no matter what else you may have heard. I know for a fact that there are or were rumors out there about this situation. I have talked with Ivan Rogers and he explained to me the truth of the matter for I wanted to know what was going on with that situation.

I was sad to see Ivan Rogers leave the “Mental Scars” project since Ivan Rogers has been a mentor of mine for several years. I have learned a lot from him and I was loo...

I was on the set or junk yard for a few days when this was filming in indianapolis. From what I saw the cast and crew all tried their hardest to make this project. I was lucky to talk wiht many people and they all had different views. I saw you rich with a guy named phil who was doing your makeup and special effects in the blue tent and you looked scarry even though you had a big smiling face as it was going on.
I know a few people who have helped you out on this movie and they all deserve a big hand. I saw one guy I do not remember his name with a big binder always by your side taking notes, talking with the actors, and always there helping out so much. I do not know what he was doing but I remeber he was working really hard and for some reason timing everying with a stpwatch. What was he doing? I never saw someone work so hard but from what i saw everyone wroked reall hard. i can't wait to get your movie on dvd and purchase one of the dolls.

i did see it in Raleigh, NC in March 2009. I agree with Lu that I did not have high thoughts about Mental Scars because Raleigh is NO Wilmington when it comes to this sort of thing. To my surprise, the movie was very professional, well shot, scary and creepy, acting was very good even though I hated Dedra because she seems like a bitch in real life.
The flow was smooth, story line was a little confusing but I PAID ATTENTION unlike some other people, and understand the storyline.

The score was unique, dark, and had flair. I would definitely recommend this movie to horror fans, it does have the right points to become a classic. Great job to all who made a film worth watching, and YES I am picky when it comes to horror.

My grade for Mental Scars would be B+

i was there at the premiere back in march 2009. To be honest, no offense to the producers, but I walked in thinking this was going to be a low budget piece of crap. To my amazement, it as NOTHING like what I expected because of the following reasons:
    1) excellent cinematography
    2) rich colors
    3) strong acting the only exception being some of the construction workers
    4) great Native American story which at first was confusing, but at the end there is a surprise and it actually made sense...hint hint...pay attention to Dedra and what she said at the pool scene
    5) The music in the movie(score) was very dark, trance like, and rich which elevated the production quality.
    6) The special make up effects were great especially the neck slash and the face burner thing...great job!
    7) The killer was very creepy, and by him living in that junkyard made it even scarier. He will be the next legend 4 sure. Great job Richard Miles.

Ivan Rogers should have never been fired from this production! It is quite obvious by looking at his work compared to what this is, there is no comparison!

After talking with some people I know that worked on the project (thanks D & T), the lack of respect and trust shown by the producers is astounding.

When this piece of crap comes out, it looks more suited for a coaster instead of a movie. Watch out for these 2, they will take you for all they are worth!
