Exerting a wide influence over our beloved genre since day one, women have always been extremely significant to horror. Behind the scenes, as well as on screen playing everything from heroic Final Girls to the most evil killers, their contributions to fright cinema have long warranted a close examination.
Fango heard from Reyna Young of Last Doorway Productions about her latest project, the documentary WELCOME TO MY DARKSIDE: WOMEN IN HORROR. This project, currently in postproduction, aims to spotlight female involvement in and history with the genre, from the early scream queens to those creating present-day terror features. “I have a trailer coming out in February, and I’m very excited about that,” Young tells us. “I have about the first 20 minutes edited so far, and I’m still waiting for footage from certain ladies.”Young, who has numerous episodes of her LAST DOORWAY SHOW posted at her official website here, is excited to be taking on her first feature. “It’s coming along great, and I’m learning a lot about how to build my own documentary. I’m so used to doing shorts that it has been a great challenge, but a fun one.”
The project began as a vehicle to combat feelings of isolated given her inspirations and passions. “What’s great is learning about what others go through, and to know I’m not alone. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of the ladies, and it has been fantastic knowing that other women out there feel the same way I do about the genre. The interviewees include some of the leading ladies of fright, as well as newbies and up-and-comers. “So many people are used to the same actresses, but I’m interviewing new faces, covering our future in horror. Not just scream queens—I have horror hosts, directors, photographers, journalists, etc. I wanted an array of women, not just one type.” Among those sharing their views and opinions are such notables as THE CRAZIES’ Lynn Lowry, Fango Spooksmodel Shannon Lark and many others.
“The point of this documentary,” Young adds, “is to show the world the future of our genre and the women who will make it happen.” Expect WELCOME TO MY DARKSIDE on DVD later this year, and check out the site linked above for more info.
