Filmmaker/Fango scribe Brian O’Toole dropped us a line to let us know that EVILUTION and BASEMENT JACK, the first two features he produced with Eric Peter-Kaiser under their Black Gate Entertainment banner for Island Gateway Films, have landed a DVD deal. You’ll be able to check out EVILUTION in September and JACK in October.
In EVILUTION (pictured below), scripted by O’Toole and directed by Chris Conlee, an Army scientist steals an alien specimen from a lab and brings it to an apartment building for further study, but it gets loose and turns the residents into zombielike killers. BASEMENT JACK (pictured above), helmed by Michael Shelton from O’Toole’s screenplay, centers on the titular maniac, who hides in the cellars of unsuspecting families and arises to kill them when thunderstorms trigger his mania. You can see EVILUTION’s official website here and BASEMENT JACK’s site here; the Black Gate team have NECROPOLITAN, the third in the trilogy, currently in the works. This was supposed to be the final tale of the titular building and its bizarre Manager, but O’Toole reveals that a more open ending is being added to the story.
“Originally, NECROPOLITAN was going to wrap everything up,” he explains, “but after talking with fans and reading preview reviews on the Internet, Eric and I decided to focus on giving the Manager one more adventure before revealing all the secrets. We wanted to focus more on the monster-movie element of this all-new story by giving the Manager a memorable adversary to invade his perfect world.” The movie goes before the cameras this fall.
Also on the Brink slate for September is writer/director Christophe Lamot’s Belgian shocker SILENCE, ÇA TUE! (SILENCE, WE ARE SHOOTING!), to be issued on Brink’s Micro Budget label. It’s a mockumentary in the vein of MAN BITES DOG, and Silverstone says, “The film was banned in France and in Belgium for its not-so-popular theme of killing filmmakers.” Look for further details on all three DVDs here in the near future.
