RIP David Carradine

News - R.I.P.

davidcarradineobitthumbThe Associated Press has reported that actor David Carradine was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Bangkok, an apparent suicide. Carradine, who was in the Thai city to shoot a movie, was 72.

davidcarradineobitnewsThe actor was discovered by a hotel maid hanged with a curtain cord, and a preliminary police investigation found no signs of foul play. Further details are being withheld out of consideration for his family. Carradine’s long career ranged from the art house to the grindhouse and everything in between, with horror credits including Larry Cohen’s Q, Gary Graver’s TRICK OR TREATS, Robert Martin Carroll’s SONNY BOY, Anthony Hickox’s SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT (pictured) and WAXWORK II: LOST IN TIME, Fred Olen Ray’s EVIL TOONS, Ethan Wiley’s CHILDREN OF THE CORN V: FIELDS OF TERROR, Mitch Marcus’ KNOCKING ON DEATH’S DOOR, Mark Lambert Bristol’s THE MONSTER HUNTER, Matthew Leutwyler’s DEAD & BREAKFAST and upcoming features including Jon Keeyes’ FALL DOWN DEAD and James D.R. Hickox’s DETENTION. TV credits include episodes of NIGHT GALLERY, DARKROOM, HAMMER HOUSE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE, THE RAY BRADBURY THEATER and telemovie remakes of THE BAD SEED and I SAW WHAT YOU DID (alongside his brother Robert).

But he’s best known as an action star from his role as Caine in the 1972-75 TV series KUNG FU, 1986’s KUNG FU: THE MOVIE, 1992’s KUNG FU: THE LEGEND CONTINUES and the same-named spinoff series that ran from 1993-97, his villainous title turn in Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL: VOL. 1 and KILL BILL: VOL. 2 and countless low-budgeters including Paul Bartel’s cult fave DEATH RACE 2000. His most recent big-screen turn was as the campily villainous Poon Dong in CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE. Part of an acting dynasty that also included his father John Carradine and brothers Keith Carradine and Michael Bowen, he will be deeply missed by film fans worldwide.

Having worked with David just last year, I find it hard to believe he committed suicide, he was so full of life and had so much going on, so many plans, including his music, writing etc. I was looking forward to working with him again, as was my elder brother, Anthony, who directed him in 2 features back in the 80's. My heart go's out to his family, he was truly a 'STAR', and perhaps when I look up at the sky tonight, they'll be a new one burning brightly. Miss you David, One Love, James

While there is a form of autoerotic gratification that involves self-strangulation (up to a point -when the strangling rope is released from its tight grip on the neck), it does not involve the rope touching the genitals. Apparently some people have died from accidents arising from this autoerotic strangulation. Whoever started this rumor about Carradine's death involving the rope in two places was ignorant of the details of the autoerotic strangulation process and speculated wildly or just made something up to cause sensation. The official police statement has said details are being released to the family only. May this magnificent actor rest in peace.

I know it's hard for a lot of people to accept that Dave's death is a possible suicide, and as a person who's Father committed suicide, I know how hard such a thing is to deal with.

I would like to say that, we should remember that often times somebody who commits suicide is suffering from some form of a sickness, whether it be depression or some other mental illness. We should remember that people who commit suicide are quiet often not in their normal state of mind, and not thinking very rationally. However, never should we let this impair our judgment on anybody (and I'm happy to say that most people don't seem to let this change their opinion on Mr. Carradine).

Suicide is something that can happen to just about anybody, under the right circumstances. But as I have said many times today on other forums and websites, Mr. Carradine is, was, and will always be a great actor who really brought a lot of smiles to many people over the years, including myself.

One of David Carradine's earliest roles was in a 1960's TV remake of the movie Johnny Belinda. Jane Wyman starred in the original, as a deaf mute girl who is raped and gives birth to an illegitimate child. Mia Farrow (I think) played the role in the remake, Carradine was her attacker. A bit of "Bill" could already be seen in his performance.

Is it true the rope was tied around his neck and junk?

This is so sad to hear about! I really can't believe that he actually hung himself....why? And in the process of working on a movie? I hope that the authorities look into foul play, or an accident....this is too difficult for me to grasp. I just don't believe he commited suicide...there was no reason for it.
RIP David, I was a big fan and always will be.
