Terrifyingly Gnarly #18 – HOUSE OF THE DEVIL’s A.J. BOWEN

AJ BOWENTo me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated HOUSE OF THE DEVIL reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in THE SIGNAL, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror, an actor with talent and genuine love for all things horror, sci-fi and just plain awesome.

Terrifyingly Gnarly # 17: CROPSEY in NYC with the Filmmakers and Myself!

CropseyAbout five or so months ago, when the weather was a bit warmer in New York City and Halloween wasn’t happily breathing down our necks, I was satisfying my need for the macabre at the Tribeca Film Festival. At Tribeca I was treated to a damn good documentary entitled CROPSEY (you can read my brief review here). The film centers on a classic urban legend which attached itself to a set of real and horrifying crimes on Staten Island in the 1980s at the height of Satanic Panic and explores the man at the center of it all.

Terrifyingly Gnarly: GRACE (Sam’s Review)

GRACEThe idea of deeming something a classic in the present film climate is a bit difficult, I think. It seems it’s a lot harder for a horror movie to come out of nowhere (see: limited release and/or direct-to-DVD) and take the mainstream by storm than it was once upon a time. And while I can see GRACE becoming a film to remember and champion for our niche group, I’m really pulling for it to break out through word of mouth, because I feel it could definitely become a genre classic. GRACE is a genuinely affecting, unsettling and original movie and, given the chance, will truly unnerve the best of ‘em.

Terrifyingly Gnarly #15: Get ‘Em While They’re Young, or They’ll Get You (Isabelle Fuhrman FTW)

ORPHAN[Note: If you have yet to see ORPHAN, do not read this blog as the ending is revealed!]

Originally, this blog was going to be half of what you will read. Then I saw ORPHAN and got terribly excited with how much I loved it. So I’m throwing my thoughts on ORPHAN into this, because the initial subject was children anyway. I’m making it work.

Terrifyingly Gnarly #14 - CHUD gets it right/Weekend of Horrors

chudsitelogoI’m sure many of those who visit the Fango site can agree with me or share the fact that I don’t only love horror. While horror speaks to me and gets me more excited than pretty much any other type of film, I am an all-around lover of movies and all-around nerd for them. One of the sites, I visit without a doubt multiple times a day is CHUD, and it’s because they love everything and walk the finest line between all-out geekdom and intelligent looks at the power cinema holds. They know their shit, and they know it well.
