One day I was sitting in the Fango offices at my desk when a package arrived. It was addressed to me courtesy of the FANGORIA FRIGHTFAN FILMFEST. I opened it up and there were seven short films inside, one of which was entitled KILLER KRAPPER (which, I will admit got me, as I love bathroom humor), and I thought to myself, anyone who calls their film KILLER KRAPPER is likely okay with me. Little did I know…There was another film included called PERVULA: HE WANTS TO SUCK YOUR …! I quickly inserted PERVULA into my machine and sat back to watch. What I saw was the single most hysterical short film I’d ever seen. I started to laugh, and quite loudly. Then, I ran to share it with my boss, and just watching him and hearing his comments had me in stitches. I wasn’t sure at that point if it was the movie or my boss’ reaction that got me going. He is the KING of bathroom humor, and his comments were hilarious. Soon people from all over the office were peeking in to see what all the laughing was about. I told them we were watching PERVULA, and suddenly everyone wanted to see it. I had made it famous in the Fango offices! Then we had a screening for the entire crew. Soon everyone was laughing and buzzing about PERVULA.
PERVULA is the brainchild of Armando D. Munoz at EEK Entertainment. Even calling his film company EEK makes me smile. But enough about EEK, let’s get straight on to PERVULA. Obviously Pervula is a perverted take on Dracula. The story unfolds in silent black and white, which is an amazingly clever way to disguise the inadequacies of video. There are title cards with type and tiny perverted graphic to move the story along, so basically this is a lovingly nasty tribute to the silent film. The story goes like this: a beautiful blonde woman is hanging around her apartment when suddenly Drac-, I mean Pervula appears. His face is a scary pillow, his nails are long and he is obsessed with smelling panties. This obsession gives him a hard on which we see as he walks from side to side. Then he does a burlesque dance with his hard-on in tow, naturally. The rest I will merely let you see for yourself as PERVULA can be seen in all its pant-smelling glory below!
And it isn’t just me that’s in love with the short- PERVULA has been a winner in many film festivals, and took home such honors as the Jury Prize in the FEARLESS TALES GENRE FEST, Best Screenplay at HORROR DANCE and Most Perverted Film at the SICK PUPPY FESTIVAL. And of course, the Marla Newborn Best Bathroom Humor award at the FANGORIA OFFICE SCREENING FESTIVAL.
I wrote to Armando to tell him how much I love his sense of humor, and asked how he came up with such stories such as PERVULA, KILLER KRAPPER and PANTY KILL. That led us into the following conversation…
Armando Munoz: As a fear filmmaker, I certainly want to make audiences jump and scream, squirm, gasp, gag and puke. And a squirt of pee in shocked hilarity from time to time.
Marla: How specifically did you develop PERVULA?
A.M.: Legend is, PERVULA was a reel of Super 8 film found buried at the bottom of F.W. Murnau’s panty drawer after he died. Because its fashioned in the silent era style, Pervula is one film that isn’t filled to bursting with splatter and ultraviolence. Still I’m a sucker for a good gross out, so I substituted all of the blood and guts with chunky barf and stinky super farts and other bodily fluids and excretions. As Murnau would, right?
Marla: What is the role of panties in your films?
On the role of panties in my films – Panties have played a major role in many of my films, the first appearance, a thong on an unfortunate victim fleeing from a rampaging toilet in my debut film THE KILLER KRAPPER. Plenty of panties are eaten, spanked and stretched beyond their limits during Pervula’s modest running time. Panties finally become the title character in PANTY KILL (“The panty count continues…”), which chronicles a night of underpants slaughter in the suburbs, committed by a killer known as Crotchless Panty Face. I probably spend more on panties in my movies than I spend on catering. They are cheaper than actors, and easier to feed.
Horror films are usually populated with pretty victims, it’s just more tragic when a sexy young woman or handsome guy comes to a messy, premature end. Well, sometimes pretty panties have to die young, too. Silk panties, lace panties, cotton butt-huggers, butt-floss, speedos, granny panties…NOW, NO UNDERPANTS ARE SAFE! Excuse me…
Marla: I love Pervula. What is his future?
A.M.: On Pervula’s future – After years of film festival hauntings, Pervula is being assembled into an anthology feature with my other short sickies THE KILLER KRAPPER, MIME AFTER MIDNIGHT (“Silent…But Deadly!”), THE TERRIBLE OLD TRAN (“Part Fish, Part Swish.”), which is a redressing of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Terrible Old Man, and PANTY KILL. The anthology will be titled after the wraparound segment I am currently working on, called KNIFE HAPPY.
So there you have it. The funniest, sickest and most disgusting bathroom humor ever, which makes Adult Swim seem like the Disney Channel.
I made PERVULA even more famous this past Mother’s Day when my family got together and were all eating at the dining room table (not a great time to talk PERVULA). I (some might say inappropriately) told the story of PERVULA, and while my sister-in-law didn’t laugh too much, everyone else did, especially my 16 year old nephew.
