RAISING HELL
Having been bombarded with hype-filled reviews, I went into THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL with high expectations. Unfortunately, I came away from the film feeling as disappointed as I felt after watching Oren Peli's over-hyped PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (which may have worked as a short film that took place over three nights, but was simply excruciatingly at feature length).

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here. SATURDAYAfter being up way too late the night before watching GOLDEN GIRLS and SEX AND THE CITY reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, DIE-NER (GET IT?).

To me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated HOUSE OF THE DEVIL reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in THE SIGNAL, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror, an actor with talent and genuine love for all things horror, sci-fi and just plain awesome.

Just when it seemed that usage of the term “torture porn” was behind us, it’s once again raised its ugly head - from reviews of THE HILLS RUN RED and Lars von Trier's ANTICHRIST to blog posts about how PARANORMAL ACTIVITY earned more than SAW VI this past weekend. "Torture porn" is a term that simply doesn't make sense when describing horror films that feature graphic depictions of torture. To the uninitiated, it sounds more like a subgenre of porn than a horror subgenre, as evidenced by Roger Ebert's review of ANTICHRIST:

As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything. What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.
